Thoroughly familiar with –and a faithful guardian of– Greek musical creation, conductor Byron Fidetzis also “visits” fairly often less well-known areas of the broader European repertoire, bringing the public into contact with masterpieces that we rarely enjoy in concert halls. Among the works falling within this category is the highly dramatic, Beethovenesque Overture by Franz Schubert, as well as the Third Symphony of the great Czech Romantic composer Antonin Dvořák, one of his early works that is brimming with freshness, melodiousness and passion. At the programme’s centrepiece, Giorgos Demertzis performs Erich Korngold’s seductive Violin Concerto. The Austrian composer was one of the most astonishing child prodigies of all time, yet Europe easily and unjustly forgot his enormous talent as a composer, when Korngold in 1935, then 38 years old, settled in Hollywood – only to leave his as yet indelible mark on film music.
