In a letter to Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann had confessed that she would like the music of the third section of his Sonata for violin no.1 to be the musical accompaniment of her passage to eternity. As her husband, Robert Schuman, wrote his own Sonata for violin no. 2 shortly before his mental breakdown, this work is indeed passionately resonating with the conflicting emotions that were overwhelming him. Czech composer Leoš Janáček wrote his only Sonata for violin in the troubled years of World War I. As in all his music, in this work too enigmatic fragments of musical motifs are juxtaposed with lyrical melodies, creating a unique sound universe. Performed by Leonidas Kavakos and Yuja Wang, two of the greatest soloists of our time whose interpretation abilities know no bounds, these three fascinating sonatas find their purest expression.
