There can be no doubt that chamber music offers to the musicians performing it the genuine pleasure of acting as part of a collective musical action. At the same time, it cultivates and sharpens the reflexes of all good musicians, who have to listen carefully at all times to their own role within a wider ensemble, recognizing when to fully serve the intentions of their partners-in-music and when to take the lead. In this environment of joy and learning, the aspiring young musicians of the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra perform two of early German Romanticism’s truly fascinating works – Spohr’s Nonet in F major and Mendelssohn’s Octet in E flat major, both of which are not heard in concert halls as often as they deserve.
