The leading piano virtuoso Seong-Jin Cho, after his triumphant debut at Megaron the Athens Concert Hall in May 2022 with Sergey Prokofiev’s Second Concerto and the historic Philharmonia Orchestra, returns to the Christos Lambrakis Hall on Wednesday 25 October at 8:30 pm. for a one-of-a-kind recital covering a wide range of world literature for piano.
From the highly demanding programme of the award-winning South Korean soloist, two benchmark compositions stand out: the Mirrors by Maurice Ravel and the Fantasia of Dante by Franz Liszt. In his recital at Megaron, Seong-Jin Cho will also perform Joseph Haydn’s Piano Sonata No. 34 in E minor, Ravel’s Minuet on the Name of Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Adagio in B minor and Liszt’s Three Petrarch Sonnets.

… came into the spotlight in 2015, when he won first prize at the Warsaw International Chopin Competition – perhaps the world’s greatest piano competition. In January 2016, he signed an exclusive contract with the Deutsche Grammophon record label.
Based in Berlin, the sought-after South Korean pianist tours the world, performing with renowned orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, Paris Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, etc.). He regularly collaborates with conductors of international renown (Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Andris Nelsons, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Simon Rattle, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Lahav Shani).
During the 2023-2024 artistic period, his debut at the Salzburg Festival with the Motsarteum Orchestra under Ivor Bolton and his return to the BBC Proms in London with the Philharmonia and Santtu-Matias Rouvali as conductor are expected with particular interest. This year’s programme also includes new performances with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony, with whom he will give concerts at the orchestra’s headquarters and at Carnegie Hall. In addition, this season, Seong-Jin Cho will perform for the first time with the Cleveland Orchestra as well as the San Francisco and Chicago Symphonies. He will also tour with the Berlin Philharmonic and Kirill Petrenko in Korea and with the Leipzig Gewandhaus, conducted by Andris Nelsons, in Korea and Japan, and in the spring of 2024 he will tour Europe with the Washington National Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gianandrea Noseda.
A highly active soloist, Seong-Jin Cho gives recitals in the most prestigious symphony halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concert Hall in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Berlin, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Barbican in London, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, as well as at renowned festivals (Roque d’Anthéron, Verbier, etc.). etc.). This season, he has scheduled recitals at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Elysian Fields Theatre, the Culture and Conference Centre (KKL) in Lucerne, the St. Cecilia Hall and Carnegie Hall.
Recent recordings include his solo album The Handel Project (2023) and a CD of Chopin works with the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda (2021). His discography, which has received rave reviews, also includes works by Chopin, Schubert, Berg, Liszt, Debussy and Mozart.
Seong-Jin Cho was born in 1994 in Seoul. He took up the piano at the age of six and gave his first recital at 11. In 2009 he became the youngest winner of the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (Japan), and in 2011, at the age of 17, he won third prize at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. He has studied with Michel Béroff in Paris.
