The original opera El Greco by Giorgos Hadjinassios tells the story of the journey of Dominikos Theotokopoulos from his native Crete to Italy and then to Spain, where he remained until his death. Throughout his journey, the great painter sought the divine breath hidden in every being, behind the forms, and wished to be reunited with the Creator. The work is in no way a historical documentary, but deals with the journey of Greco’s inner search as any artist would. For this reason, the time and space, far from being confined within walls, favours Greco’s encounter with another great Cretan, Nikos Kazantzakis, as much as with the mythical Icarus, who is in ardent search of freedom and inner light. The melodiousness that characterizes the musical dialogues and arias captivates both the performers and the audience, while the libretto, written in Italian, is by Elias Liamis.
