The internationally acclaimed Øystein Baadsvik is no ordinary tuba player. He is a true aficionado of the “young” wind instrument, which only appears in 1835 and due to its… weight is not ranked in the first line. For three decades Baadsvik has been active exclusively as a soloist, breaking down all conventional restrictions on the virtuosic use of the tuba. His programme features transcriptions of popular works (Greg, Bach, Piazzolla) and original compositions (Clearfield, Baadsvik), with the aim of proving that “the tuba is the coolest musical instrument on the planet”. Baadsvik chose to learn the tuba in order to gain the attention of his future wife. Not only did he succeed, but he invented techniques that showcase the instrument’s capabilities and sonic palette. He even claims that he can make the tuba sound like a helicopter, but also like the perfect instrument to musically accompany a romantic date!
