The Mediterranean Sea is the microcosm of global maritime issues, including challenges such as sustainable tourism, green shipping, marine pollution and the wider green transition.
In 2015, the adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2012), which is a global action plan for people, planet and prosperity to transform our world and put it on a path to sustainability by 2030, and in particular the adoption of SDG 15 on ‘life under water’, has been a key milestone in recognising that healthy oceans and seas are essential for our existence and that the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources is paramount to ensuring all three dimensions – environmental, social and economic – of sustainable development.
Since its inception, the Conferences have gradually evolved into a general forum for dialogue that brings together governments, intergovernmental organisations, academic institutions, the private sector and NGOs that share a common vision for ocean protection and take action to support that vision.
