Recording Centre
The recording studios of Megaron the Athens Concert Hall, also known as the Recording Centre, were constructed in 1993-95. The Recording Centre operates in parallel with other Megaron activities. Its purpose is to produce world class audio recordings from selected in-house as well as outsourced events.
Since its launch the Megaron Recording Centre has realized over 1,100 recordings. A good number of them is in commercial distribution. A full list of all the commercially released productions of the Recording Centre is available here.
Two of its major recording projects have been nominated for Grammy awards. The first one was the year 2000 choral performance nomination, in the classical music category, for Schubert’s Mass by Orchestre Revolutionaire et Romantique and Monteverdi Choir, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, for PHILIPS Classics. The second nomination was in 2014 for small instrumental ensemble, in the classical music category, for Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas, with Leonidas Kavakos – violin and Enrico Pace – piano, for DECCA Classics.
A series of baroque music recordings by George Petrou with Kamerata, the Friends of Music Orchestra, known internationally as Armonia Atenea, of its early music performances, culminated in the international recording scene with productions that gathered many international awards, with most notable ones the DIAPASON Music Magazine of 2011 and the OPERA magazine of 2013, for best recordings of the year.
Many other internationally acclaimed orchestras and musicians have used the facilities of Megaron’s Recording Centre, namely Nikolaus Harnoncourt – Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Andrew Davis – BBC Symphony Orchestra, Leo Brower, VANGELIS, Jessie Norman, Kathleen Battle, Hildegard Behrens, Janis Vakarelis, Franco Faggioli, Daniel Behle, Max Cencic, Garry Burton, Charles Lloyd, ECM’s producer Manfred Eicher and such labels as Deutsche Grammophon, EMI CLASSICS, SONY CLASSICAL, Warner Classical, BMG, BIS, NAXOS, RCA Red Seal, Blue Note, Etcetera, Candid, etc. All contemporary greek major composers and performers have worked in the Megaron Recording Centre, among which Mikis Theodorakis, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Stavros Xarchakos, Yiannis Markopoulos, Eleni Karaindrou, Dionisis Savvopoulos, Mimis Plessas, Stefanos Korkolis, Maria Farantouri, Vicky Leandros, Yiorgos Dalaras, Haris Alexiou, Dimitra Galani, Mario Frangoulis, Alkisits Protopsalti, to name but a few.
