The first half of the 19th century is described as the golden age of the German Lied. Schubert’s lbroad musical horizon legacy brought the composers of the second half of the century face-to-face with the challenge of transcendence. Although a lover of absolute music, Brahms would write one hundred and ninety songs for voice and piano during his lifetime, enriching his personal idiom with references to tradition. Mahler opts for harmonic ambiguity that adds depth to the dramatic narrative of his songs, while Strauss composes a total of two hundred songs, remaining faithful to, but not captive to, romantic beliefs. Helmut Dawitz, an internationally acclaimed pianist from Austria who specializes in accompanying the lieder, and the great soprano Anna Stylianaki will explore the repertoire of these three representatives of mature Romanticism, as well as the melodic creations of leading Greek composers such as Kalomiris, Samaras and Spathis, highlighting hidden influences and common pursuits.
