ALFRED SCHNITTKE
Tο mark the 20th anniversary of the death of post-modernist composer Alfred Schnittke (1934–1998), five prominent Thessaloniki-based musicians perform works by this great exponent of new Russian music.
The touching Piano Trio (1992) is dedicated to the doctor Alexander Potapov, who managed to save the composer’s life on two occasions; the brief Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello (1988) is based on Mahler’s unfinished Quartet, while the heart-rending, eerie Piano Quintet (1976) conveys the composer’s grief for the loss of his mother.
