Mikis Theodorakis – Odysseus Elytis: Axion Esti

It was in the early 1960s when Mikis Theodorakis, a young and promising composer of post-war Greek music at the time, envisioned a fusion of Western symphonic music and the Greek traditions of Christian-Orthodox church music and the popular music. Odysseus Elytis’ expansive poetic vision inspired Mikis into composing a folk oratorio, a timeless landmark in Greek popular music.
Members of the Camerata under the baton of the internationally acclaimed conductor George Petrou present the original version of this work (1964) without electric reinforcement in the symphonic and lyrical part, enabling Mikis’s bold arrangements to shine through the pure lines of acoustic sound.
