In the long-awaited Met production, celebrated Russian soprano Anna Netrebko sings Aida, going toe-to-toe with mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, who impressed as Carmen this year at Herod Atticus Odeon.
Ethiopian princess Aida feels torn between her love for her father, her country, and Radamès, captain of the Egyptian guard. Radamès sacrifices himself for her love; Amneris, the daughter of the Egyptian king and also in love with him, machinates, betrays, and regrets.
