The artistic programming of Megaron the Athens Concert Hall for the last quarter of the 2023-2024 season combines new and established seasons of events, brilliant soloists of the new generation, as well as established artists, internationally renowned chamber music ensembles and groups, leading conductors of world renown and famous dance companies.
The Megaron Spring Festival returns in April (8-20/4), with important names of the international music and dance scene giving their presence: Quartetto d’Archi della Scala (Milan Scala String Quartet) and virtuoso pianist Alasdair Beatson, organist Winfried Bönig, the Batsheva Ensemble (12-14/4), violinist Janine Jansen and pianist Denis Kozukhin (16/4) and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Constantinos Carydis (20/4). In April, one of the most talked about artistic events of last year, Dimitris Papaioannou’s INK, will be presented again on the stage of Alexandra Trianti Hall, only for five performances that have already been sold out (22-26/4). In the same month (27-28/4), for the first time Megaron the Athens Concert Hall presents the Wind Instruments Weekend, which gives the public the rare opportunity to listen, within a two-day period, to well-known and less well-known brass and woodwind instruments: pan flute, flute, trumpet, oboe, bassoon, tuba. Participating soloists are Matthijs Koene, Nikos Nikopoulos, Simon Höfele, Yannis Economou, Alexandros Economou, Øystein Baadsvik. Also in April (30/4), great soloists join forces with the Athens State Orchestra to present at the Athens Concert Hall, in the context of the Adagio cycle, the “St. Matthew Passion“, the unsurpassed masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach, in a semi-staged version with movement (co-production: Athens State Orchestra – Megaron the Athens Concert Hall).
In May, the successful Greek Soloists series at Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall welcomes pianists Dora Bakopoulou and Achilleas Wastor (15/5) as well as Timotheos Gavriilides-Petrin (cello) and Vassilis Varvaressos (piano) (22/5). On 20 and 21/5 the podium star Teodor Currentzis and the Utopia Orchestra, which he created two years ago, will perform Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony at the Christos Lambrakis Hall. One week later (28.05), the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra – Youth Orchestra in Residence at Megaron the Athens Concert Hall, performs with the distinguished conductor and violin and viola soloist Michael Barenboim. In May, the second meeting of the new event series “Groundbreaking”, inspired by Stathis Kalyvas, is also scheduled, focusing on innovation and creativity (31/5). The artistic period 2023-2024 closes with one of the greatest masterpieces of world drama, William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (16-20/5), in a modern version – with the collaboration of Greek and Turkish artists – that transports the action to the present-day Balkans.
