Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), distinguished pianist Charis Dimaras, Professor of piano and chamber music at Ithaca College, NY (USA), performs some of the great Russian composer’s most exquisite works. He is joined on the stage by his sons Alex and Panos. The programme of their recital brings in dialectic contrast works for solo piano and chamber music compositions from all creative periods of the composer’s life, such as the famous song “Vocalise” in a transcription for violin and piano, the Trio for piano, violin and cello No. 1 (composed in 1892), the magnificent Sonata for cello and piano (1901), and a selection of compositions from Rachmaninoff’s two famous sets of Preludes, opus 23 (1903) and opus 32 (1903). A fitting and comprehensive tribute to the leading pianist and performer of all times –according to the majority of experts– and one of the most widely acclaimed and gifted composers in Western European scholarly musical tradition.
