Internationally renowned soloist and conductor Michael Barenboim takes to the podium with the strings of the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) in a concert that touches some of the most sensitive chords of the repertoire. Mendelssohn completed his Symphony for Strings No. 10 at the age of just fourteen, in which we can discern both Haydn’s influence and the signs of the composer’s genius. Schubert’s light-hearted Rondo for violin and strings, an elegant work that is rarely performed, elevates the Viennese version of classicism as a perfect ‘musical dessert’. On 20 January 1936, King George V passed away – the following day, in just a few hours, Hindemith wrote the Trauermusik (funeral music) suite in London to commemorate his death. The work is broadcast live on the BBC with the composer performing the viola part. The concert closes with Dvorak’s melodic Serenade, a work of refined lyrical beauty and one of the composer’s most popular orchestral works.
