The story of the Sevillian gypsy Carmen, a worker in a cigarette factory, who seduces a corporal named Don José, and then abandons him for the sake of famous bullfighter Escamillo. When she scornfully rejects his entreaties, Don José stabs her to death at the arena.
One of the most popular operas in the repertory, with exquisite melodies, composed by Georges Bizet and staged at the Opéra-Comique three months before his early death: he did not live to see its subsequent huge success. In the Metropolitan Opera production, Clémentine Margaine and Roberto Alagna appear as the fatal lovers.
