OPERA – NEW PRODUCTION

After the enthusiastic reception by opera-lovers of his astounding production of Lulu in 2015, South African artist William Kentridge will now reintroduce audiences to the magic of his visual universe with Alban Berg’s other operatic masterpiece, Wozzeck. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium, with baritone Peter Mattei in the title role. Soprano Elza van den Heever is Wozzeck’s unfaithful mate, alongside a cast that includes tenor Christopher Ventris, bass-baritone Christian Van Horn, and tenor Gerhard Siegel.

Among the most influential composers of the 20th century, Alban Berg (1885–1935) lived in Vienna at a time of thriving artistic creativity and intellectual interaction. His vocal and instrumental works combine Schoenberg’s revolutionary techniques with the grandeur of such late Romantic composers as Mahler. The libretto is his own close adaptation of Georg Büchner’s play Woyzeck (1836-37).
