MET HD Live
The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess

OPERA – NEW PRODUCTION

Porgy and Bess: ‘America’s folk opera’, written by George and Ira Gershwin, became the voice of the ‘black roots’. A combination of music, dance, and emotion, it tells a heartbreaking story set in a black neighbourhood in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 20th century. Crippled beggar Porgy falls in love with drug-addict Bess, who is married to Crown, a violent stevedore.

In his Met debut, James Robinson masterfully brings to life the tragic love story, directing a dynamic cast, with Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the leading roles.
