The timeless appeal of Mozart’s Magic Flute has, of course, a lot to do with the universally acknowledged perfection and expressiveness of his music. Yet it is also due to the fact that Emanuel Schikaneder’s libretto expresses the ever-topical humanistic ideals of the European Enlightenment and Freemasonry in an eloquent and vividly symbolic way. Under the baton of the dynamic Katia Moles’, a cast of fine Greek lyric performers recreate Mozart’s operatic swansong in a semi-staged version, giving a beautifully spiritual, fairytale tone to this year’s Christmas celebrations.
