CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL CREATION
The major economic crisis in Germany that followed on the First World War led to the rapid rise of Nazism. The fascist, nationalistic ideology of the Nazis – a threat to free, intellectual creativity – compelled artists and scholars to flee the country. In their new homes, adjusting to new lives, these men were able to think and practice their art without constraint. The refugees included important modern composers like Kurt Weill, Paul Dessau, Hans Eisler, Ernst Krenek and Paul Hindemith, some of whose works will be presented by the Greek Contemporary Music Ensemble under Theodore Antoniou.
